Denture cleaners can destroy your soft reline .
Not all denture
cleaners are the same. Not
all soft relines are the same either.
Is your patient having trouble with eating, smiling, talking, and
being natural with your friends because your dentures are lose fitting ?
In studies using
one type of reline material, some cleaners make that material harder as
it ages, yet other cleaners make the same material softer as it ages.
Regardless of
softer or harder, the process is degrading the reline.
Shrinkage of
the soft reline is the result of the reline getting harder, causing
loose fit. Softening of the reline causes expansion, also
resulting in a distorted, hard to seat fit.
This premature
breakdown is caused by cleaner !
All denture cleaners
speed up the aging process of your soft relines.
The harsher the cleaner, the faster the soft reline will
breakdown, fit will distort, and the case will fail.
All the denture
cleaners that are sold in drug stores are fast acting and cause fast
soft reline breakdown. They
clean so fast that they should be classified as “Stain Removers”
instead of “Denture Cleaner”.
Many denture
cleaners sold in drug stores contain Perborate (Borax) as the active
ingredient. Others contain bleach
(Hypochlorite), and
Persulfate (Sulfur) as active ingredients.
Only “Prolastic Denture Cleaner” uses Buffered Alkali as the
active ingredient. Alkali is the active ingredient in many of your household
cleaners such as dishwasher liquid, shampoo, bar soap, clothes washing
detergent, etc.
The reason that
all the denture cleaners sold in stores use harsh chemicals is because
fast acting cleaners are easier to sell.
Their marketing experts sell these products with claims of
“Fast Acting, Effective, and Easy”.
They never tell you that their products are harmful to soft
relines, and by default, put the blame on the dentist for using
sub-standard materials or lab service.
In research
studies, using popular, advertised brands, the safest cleaners on the
market for soft relines use oxygen as the cleaning action and use
Presulfate (Sulfur) base. (These
studies have not included Alkali based cleaners, perhaps because they
are slow acting and don’t impress the researchers.)
The oxygenating compound used in the Persulfate products is “Oxone”.
The two Oxone
products on the market are “Sparkle” and our own “Pro-Klean
Powder”.
Pro-Klean Powder
has been on the market for over 25 years.
Sparkle has been on the market for only 11 years.
Sparkle is a copy of our Pro-Klean, so we must have done
something right for them to copy us.
What they did
wrong was to make Sparkle much too strong.
This is why in research studies, Sparkle is better than the
others, but not by much of a margin.
Sparkle degrades soft relines almost as fast as the
others.
We, as the
inventors of “The Original” Oxone “Stain Remover”, Prolastic
Denture Cleaner and Pro-Klean”, we know everything about it, and why
we formulated it at the strength that we did.
We know that it shouldn’t act in only 15 minutes, and that it
shouldn’t be used everyday. The
original copy that Sparkle made was 100% Oxone.
Wow, that’s
strong !
Our formula
works in 6 to 8 hours as an overnight soak and should only be used once
a week (twice a week if you really need to).
That’s the method to use if you don’t want to destroy
your soft reline.
What you should
use everyday is our Buffered Alkali based “Prolastic Denture
Cleaner”. It is the only
Buffered Alkali based denture cleaner on the market.
It is slow and
gentle and kills fungus & bacteria.
It does not remove stubborn stains, nor do we want it to.
You use “Stain Remover” for that, but a gentle one, not one
that acts in only 15 minutes. “Pro-Klean
Powder” is the gentle stain remover to use, when needed, not everyday.
This is typical
of the testimonials that we receive from our happy customers:
“My first
lower denture soft reline only lasted one year.
When I complained to my new dentist, he recommended your
Prolastic Cleaner 6 years ago. My
soft reline is still in good shape with the use of this product.”

We hear comments
like this from all of our customers who take the time to write us.
The following
research article was publish in the dental journal “Journal of
Prosthodontics” Vol. 9, No. 3, Sept., 2000, pp 148-155.
“Effect
of Denture Cleaners, Surface Finish, and Temperature on Molloplast B
Resilient Liner Color, Hardness, and Texture “
This is a 6 year
study using one type of soft reline material “Molloplast B” and 11
different denture cleaners, testing for color changes, hardness, and
texture.
The cleaners
used were typical drug store bought brands with active ingredients of
Perborate (Borax), Persulfate (Sulfur), and Hypochlorite (Bleach).
Efferdent,
Polident, and Kleenite is Perborate.
Javex/Calgon is Hypochlorite.
Sparkle (and Pro-Klean) is Persulfate.
Our
“Pro-Klean” was omitted from this study, we assume because the slow
cleaning action did not impress the researchers.
Our slow action of cleaning was purposely formulated to safeguard
soft relines. Our Alkali
cleaner, “Prolastic Denture Cleaner” is even slower action, which is
much gentler than any of the cleaners tested.
The results were
that the harshest cleaner was Hypochlorite.
The next
harshest cleaner was Perborate. Efferdent, Polident, and Kleenite
The most gentle
was Presulfate. Sparkle.
( Same active ingredients as used in Pro-Klean)
Again, Sparkle
is much too concentrated for use everyday.
The conclusion
of this study is that Persulfate is the safest product tested to use on
soft relines. Unfortunately,
our Alkali based “Prolastic Denture Cleaner” was not tested,
otherwise, it would have dramatically outperformed the other brands.
“Prolastic
Denture Cleaner” will add to the life of your soft reline no mater
what type of soft reline material that your dentist prescribed.
If your dentist prescribes “Prolastic Silicone” reline
material, your relines will last even longer.
For stain
removal, you should use our Presulfate/ Oxone based “Pro-Klean
Powder” once a week, or as needed.
For stubborn
stains, use our “Pro-Klean Liquid” as needed. (A mild acid based
stain remover).
Our goal is to
make your soft denture relines as comfortable and long lasting as
possible. Our slow cleaning
action is by far, the gentlest on the market.
Prolastic
Denture Cleaner and Pro-Klean Powder and Liquid are not available in
stores. Consumers who have
not been properly educated about denture cleaners by a dentist, are not
impressed with our slow action cleaners.
Most consumers want Fast, Fast, Fast, and marketing experts
don’t inform you that it damages the soft liner.
Another typical
testimonial :
" I wish I
found out about your denture cleaner products sooner.
I was used to getting soft relines once a year and wondered if it
was worth the annual expense.
Since using Prolastic Cleaner I get at least a couple of extra
years out of my soft relines. I
have been wearing dentures for over 20 years now.
I have been using your cleaner for about 8 years.
I am only on my 3nd soft reline since using your
products. Thank You ! "
J. G.
Kansas City, MO.
Try Prolastic
Cleaner and Pro-Klean Powder for a year.
You’ll notice the difference and you won’t recommend anything
else from then on.
You will be
able to re-introduce patients to soft relines who had given up on the
hassle every year. A happy patient is a good referral source as
well, and therefore, expect do more soft relines than
before.
