The
"DC" series from Pollard Dental Products is a fast, controlled and predictable
method of depth cutting to a prescribed self-limiting depth. Some of the more
experienced dentists are able to estimate depth control. Less experienced operators
find them indispensable. Regardless of your experience, using them will make
preparation faster with no guess work. Saving time is the key, whether you think you
need them or not.

First,
imagine a the esthetic curve shown above right. |

|
The
red marks are the esthetic angle where mesial and distal margins need to be place to be
most natural. The blue marks show approximately where margins will be placed. |

|
The
yellow marks are the preparation outline. Note, in the gingival 3rd, there could be
slight reduction of some teeth but no reduction in the incisal 3rd. Other teeth
require as much as 1.5 mm of reduction. Where it is stated "No Reduction",
there is a requirement for preparation for a platform for the veneer and
margination. The goal is to remove as little tooth structure as possible while
making a well designed preparation. Preparation design will be covered in a later
chapter. |

|
There
is a different depth cutter for each depth cut required. |

Posterior Depth Cutting

|
(photo 1)- There
is limited access to the bottom of the fissure.
(photo 2)- You must remove the cusps. to get an accurate depth cut. |

|
(photo 1)- With
the cusps. removed down to the fissure you can see that was only a .5 mm depth cut.
(photo 2)- Now you get the accurate 1.0 mm depth from the fissure. |

| Now you have
complete depth control around the entire tooth. |
|
Bicuspids have
the same problem. The upper red line shows the bottom of the fissure. The
lower red line shows the depth cut. With the drill at a
45 degree angle, you will lose about 25% of the depth cut.
